COMMENTS: February 1994 issue of Canyon Alumnus (Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona) ran the following regarding John's retirement: "Yes, it is true. John Howerton and Ron Phillips are making history and melodiously beginning a life of leisure. Great historians come and go, but nore of us at Grand Canyon University will forget the one great historian, John Howerton. It was 1965 when John came to Grand Canyon as a professor of History. During that time he has chaired the History and Social Sciences Department, the Athletic Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee, just to name a few. However, John is probably more famous for his mustache, beard, eyebrows, and his ghost town trips with the students. He is a man who has involved himself in all activities of the University from sponsoring the student government and serving at the Hanging of the Green to keeping score for the 'Lope's basketball games. John's new job will be spending time in Prescott, Arizona, at his summer home and tracing the Howerton family tree."

COMMENTS: Students and faculty expressed their views on Howerton in The Canyon Echoes. The headline read, "He was screechin' like a cat caught in a screen door." "John Howerton was the first history instructor who truly made history come to life for me," said Dr. Barbara Dickerson, dean of the college of liberal arts and sciences, and former student of Howerton. Averaging around 250 students per semester, Howerton has taught history to approximately 15,000 people over the past 30 years he has been at Grand Canyon University. "History was always my worst subject; I hated it,' said senior Chela Glenn, "until Mr. Howerton brought it to life for me through his passion for history and vivid similies, such as 'He was screechin' like a cat caught in a screen door.'" [close enough: It was squalling like a mashed cat in a door]. Howerton officially retired in December and, at the moment, is teaching adjunct history classes for this semester. "He is a great story-teller and lecturer, which the students really appreciate," said Dr. Barbara Hoffman, professor of history. "He knows a lot about his field; he is careful to give complete information in class, but always takes time to answer questions or to diverge," said Brent Davis, director of academic computering, and former student. Howerton originally felt a calling into the ministry following eight years of service in the Marine Corp[s]. He graduate from Canyon in 1957, and in 1962 left Midwestern Baptist Seminary to become a pastor in Phoenix. While serving as a minister at 27th Avenue Baptist Church, Howerton said he also "filled in" as a teacher at Canyon in American history and government. Eventually, he left the ministry to teach full time at Canyon, because, he said, he "also saw teaching at GCU as a Christian calling." As a former minister, Howerton is often called upon by ex-students and faculty members to perform or speak at their weddings. Dan Landes, professor of English/humanities, and Kathy Rivers, assistant professor of art, were married by Howerton in July. "We both think highly of him and respect his values," said Rivers. "I couldn't think of anybody else I would rather perform our wedding," she said. "He treated our wedding in the same meticulous manner as he conducts his classes," Landes said. Over the years Howerton has taught at Canyon, he has kept score at men's basketball games, which sometimes involved traveling with the team on road trips. "I gained an interest in basketball through a former coach, Ben Lindsay," Howerton said. But, "the hard benches became too much for me." Howerton is also famous for his chili, Landes said, which he brings as part of the annual Christmas dinner for faculty, held in his office. "His office serves as the faculty lounge in our building," said Landes. "He has always extended himself to new faculty members and other colleagues,"said Dickerson. "I can't really remove him from this place, she said. "It is difficult to envision what the dynamics will be after he leaves." Howerton's plans following his departure from Canyon are to engage in genealogical research on the Howerton family history, said Hoffman. "In this transition in his life, he is clearly a person who will not kick back in his easy chair," said Dickerson. "He will be as busy in retirement," she said, "as he was in his professional life." (Student newspaper at Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, AZ: The Canyon Echoes, February 15, 1994, page 5)

COMMENT: The CANYON HIGHWAYS, Vol 17, No. 1, January, 1975 (Official Publication of Grand Canyon College, 3300 West Camelback, Phoenix, AZ), p. 14, published the following in an article entitled, "Three Selected as Outstanding Educators." "Mr. John F. Howerton, associate professor and chairman of the Social Studies department has been named as one of the three Outstanding Educators of America for 1975 from Grand Canyon College. Howerton graduated from Prescott [AZ] Senior High School. He attended Paris Junior College, Paris, Texas, and graduated from Grand Canyon College in 1957. He also holds an M.A. from Arizona State University and an M.Div. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 until 1954 with tours of duty in China and Korea. He has served pastorates at Yarnell [AZ] Baptist Church, 25th [sic 27th] Avenue Baptist Church in Phoenix, Quarles Baptist Church in Quarles, MO., and William Jewel Baptist Church in Kansas City. He has served numerous churches in the valley area as interm pastor. Civic activities include the Phoenix, Arizona, Mayor's Housing Code Committee, Executive Board of the Arizona Conference on Adult and Youth Problems, and Deputy Registrar [Republican Party]. Howerton is a member of the Organization of American Historians. He served as moderator of the Central Baptist Association [Phoenix, AZ), 1965-1966 and program vice-president of the Pastor's Conference [Arizona Southern Baptist Convention] 1964-1965."
