We Need Your Help!

This is a new page in which we will ask for help from our readers. The content will be limited to those cases where we have been unable to link individuals to their Howerton ancestors. We would greatly appreciate help from readers having any information regarding the subject of each item. Accurate identification of these individuals will permit establishment of their personal Howerton lineage. This will likely be a regular section of the newsletter, depending upon whether the results of queries in this issue appear promising.

Bryan Howerton

JERRY RUSSELL HOWERTON - Corporal Jerry Russell Howerton was the only known Howerton lost during the Vietnam War.  We have been unable to determine his Howerton lineage.  It is extremely likely that he is descended from the Howertons who settled in extreme East Kentucky almost two hundred years ago.  It is likely that we can establish his lineage if someone can inform us of the names of his parents and grandparents.

JAMES HOWERTON b 1790-1800 - James Howerton was born between 1790 or 1791. We do not know the state in which he was born, nor the identity of his parents. The earliest record that has been found pertaining to him is the 1820 Census wherein he is recorded as residing in Union County, IL with three other white persons in his household. Sometime before 1830 he moved to Edwards County, IL and the 1840 Census of Edwards County, IL lists two other males and five females in his household.

He enrolled in Capt Gears Company of Infantry, 27th Regiment of Illinois Militia on 19 May 1832 as Fourth Corporal. He served 3 Months and 19 days on active duty and participated in the campaign against the Indians led by Black Hawk. His company was mustered out of service on 6 Sep 1832 at Galena, Illinois. He bought 40 acres of land from Edwin B Webb and Charles H Constable in Edwards County, IL in Sep 1842.

Sometime before 1870 he moved to Butler County, KY and resided near some of his children. In1870 he resided in the household of Philip Yeager.
